Maridalen

Situated in the north of Oslo, Maridalen is a valley comprising of lakes, forests, and lots of agricultural areas, collectively called Oslomarka. Much of the valley is occupied by lake Maridalsvannet, Oslo’s main source of drinking water. The valley is a popular recreational spot during both summer and winter.
The valley is only a 15-minute ride from the city centre via a car or taxi. One of the sightseeing areas in this attraction is the Margareta Church that was built in 1250. Although only ruins of the church exist today, people flock every year to the valley to witness the historical play Maridalsspillet being performed here. Another place worth visiting here is the Maridalen Church at the northern shore of the lake. Maridalen is the entry point to much of Oslo’s forests, with many trails for hiking, cycling, and skiing spread throughout the area. Birdwatching is also popular here because of common woodland species abundant here like the Three-toed Woodpecker, Tengmalm’s Owl, and Capercaillie.
