The Oslo City Museum depicts the history of the city through models, photographs and art, taking visitors through the city’s cultural and industrial development over the years. While most of the exhibitions are in the native Norwegian, you can borrow a free audio-guide titled “1000 years in 20 minutes”, available in 8 languages- including English and German.
The museum also offers its own AR app called “The City Detective”, a family activity where you get a glimpse into Oslo’s past by visiting a large family in a single room apartment, and can get a first-hand experience of the powerful Akerselva River. The aim of this activity is to find 10 historic stations in the OsLove exhibition. You do not need to speak Norwegian in order to operate the app.
The museum offers free entry on the first Saturday of each month, and has guided tours in Norwegian every weekend. Guided tours in English can be arranged with prior booking.
